Trolldom Spells for the New Year

Spells and methods from my personal practice to end the year and bring blessing into the new year.

In Trolldom, there are ways to release suffering from the old year and bring blessings into the new year, some of which are deeply integrated into agricultural practices and working with the land itself to do this magic. In this post, I outline a few of my practices, some adapted from traditional Scandinavian spells I have inherited. I do not include some of the agricultural practices here because they require some preparation and additional materials, though they are lovely and work well.

A Diminishing Spell to Release the Old

Think of three things you would like to release from the last year that feel heavy and difficult. In your hands, feel two of the three options. Release the one that feels less heavy, then bring up the third and compare it to the one in the hand. Choose the one that feels heaviest and release the other.

Use this traditional Danish charm from the 18th century to remove this issue from your life. There are several other variations of this spell from an earlier date and in other regions of Scandinavia. They are similar to the famous diminishing spells of the PGM, which have been found in many other areas of the world as well. Be assured that this method is old and works well.

These words and the structure will represent the thing you are trying to diminish or remove. If desired, under the triangle, you can write out a sincere petition asking for the removal and healing of this issue to a deity, saint, ancestor, or other working spirit that you have a relationship with.

Write the magical words on a piece of paper, and with dedicated action, each line written will diminish the ailment to nothing by the time you are done and on the last line. When done writing the last line, say “And it is done” and add emotional energy to releasing this thing fully. You may also then go back over the spell and cross out each line, further releasing any left over energy. Release the spell by burning the paper outside and allowing the wind to take it.

If the issue has been very stuck and persistent, instead wear this amulet around the neck, close to the sternum for 9 days. Remove the paper at the same hour it was placed and toss it into running water or a fire to release and remove the issue fully. All should be done with dedicated action. Wearing the amulet and letting it go into fire or water helps to fully remove the issue from the subconscious and non-physical.

If you would like to include timing, consider having the spell end on January 13th, Knut Day (Knot Day). This day signifies the end of Jul and the beginning of the new year in the old calendar. Knots in Trolldom have many uses, typically they are used to bind issues for removal. A day with this name would be potent to use.

Leaf Craft

Both of these spells are simple and efficacious.

Option 1: Releasing a leaf into the weather and wind.

Choose a dry leaf and a pen to write with, also choose an issue that you would like to remove from your life.

I will typically write out the issue on the leaf and anchor the energy of the issue in it as well. When writing, with dedicated action, anchor the problem in the leaf. You may also breathe on it and speak it into the leaf.

Then you will want to go outside and release the leaf into the wind, with dedication that you are releasing this and letting it go. I would consider facing north when releasing the leaf and letting it go during a southerly wind so that the issue is released back to the north, though this is not necessary, it just adds some additional power, timing, and symbolism.

When released, do not look back and take a different route home.

Option 2: Write a wish or petition on a leaf and burn it

In this option, pick a dry leaf of your choosing and write out either an affirmation in the present and a positive or a sincere prayer to a power you work with.

Affirmation: “Adventure and discovery are abundant for me in 2025,” “Clients and business opportunities are mine in 2025”

Petition: “Lord (Mary, Freya, Thor, Ancestors, Norns, Saint, etc), bless my life in 2025 so that it may be filled with magic, beauty, friendship, and love. In the name of X, Amen” (X is the power you are calling on, ie the three, the nine, FSH, Odin Freya, and Frigg, etc).

Burn the leaf with dedication, to release the spell or petition into life and up into the wind to be taken to where it should go and be woven into life. You may also save the ashes of this leaf and apply them to a candle or put them in a trollpåse (similar to a mojo bag). Saving the ashes of things is a common practice throughout Scandinavia and the British Isles.
